Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia

It is a serious mental disorder that can dramatically change one’s life if left untreated. It usually occurs in young adults and adolescents . Schizophrenia is derived from a Greek word which means split mind,( not split personality), which means the mind is split into two, experiencing two realities. One reality is the outside world which they perceive normally, the other one is their mind which can be terrifying , filled with paranoid ideas, delusions ( beliefs that people are trying to harm, follow/track them etc ) and Hallucinations ( that is hearing or seeing things that doesn’t exist ). Because of these experiences they can become aggressive and lash out at family members or strangers thinking that they will bring him/her harm. The person will believe with all conviction with what is happening to them is true and hence they cannot be reasoned with or argued about its falsity.

Not all people with schizophrenia present with the above symptoms but it is a common one. There are some who become withdrawn, mute and completely disengaged with the world. Sadly there are no blood  tests or brain imaging that can diagnosis this terrible disease, but a detailed interview with the patient and the family members by a trained professional can be conclusive.

There are medications like dopamine antagonists, which can alleviate the symptoms which are relatively safe ,but must be given for a certain duration. Due to the nature of the illness, counselling alone is not suitable in the initial stages of the illness.
